THE dates-n-mates service, a project hosted by the charity C-Change, was launched in June and has become such a hit it now boasts about members. MOST people would say building meaningful friendships and finding lasting love are two of the key elements to leading a happy life. And a dating and friendship agency run by and for adults with learning difficulties is helping dozens of Scots to do just that.
The dates-n-mates service, a project hosted by the charity C-Change, was launched in June and has become such a hit it now boasts about members. As well as the option of matched one-to-one dating, they offer up to six social events each month, including the popular LATE club nights at the Arches in Glasgow, book groups, talent contests and karaoke nights.
Jackie Dooley has been a member since last November and hopes dates-n-mates will help her find her Mr Right.
But the cleaner, 32, from Rutherglen, near Glasgow, is keen to settle down and hopeful of finding romance. This is a good way of meeting new people. There are lots of events and the staff always make sure you are OK and that you feel safe, which is important. I was nervous to start with but, after the first month, I felt at ease once I got to know everyone. Jackie is now a member of the Advisory Group, who are made up of members, staff and volunteers to ensure the continued success of the project.
I definitely feel more confident. They should just give it a try. When Holly Millar discovered there was an organisation to boost the social lives of adults with learning difficulties in London, she decided people in Scotland should have the same opportunity.
As one of the directors of dates-n-mates, she has been involved right from the outset and is proud of the way it has grown. Holly, 38, who has learning difficulties herself and receives support from C-Change, believes the social events have had a major impact on the lives of many people around the country. Members and non-members can both come along and enjoy the night. There have been a of a success stories so far, with three couples getting engaged as a result of meeting through dates-n-mates.
But Holly says some members are happy just to improve their confidence and social skills by having the opportunity to make new friends. Garry Spence may have one of the most recognisable voices in Scotland, thanks to his drivetime radio show on Capital FM. But he has also become a familiar face for the members of dates-n-mates since he started appearing as a guest DJ at their LATE club nights in It was actually a pretty crazy time for me personally as my twin girls were born prematurely a few days before the event.
So I figured I could make more of a difference, especially when it came to pulling in nightclub favours for venues. Garry would encourage anybody thinking about getting involved with dates-n-mates to come along to one of the club nights and give it a try. By Lisa Gray.
